Staff at Japan's Ishikawa Zoo held a practice drill to train for the eventuality of a disaster leading to animals escaping their zoo, in Kanazawa on Wednesday.

Staff carried out the drill, with the escaped chimp played by a member of zoo staff wearing a chimpanzee costume, to practice the routine of evacuating visitors and alerting authorities.

"I think the design of the construction itself doesn't allow animals to escape. It is still the negligence of the zookeepers. So in such a case when an animal escapes, how we will respond as accurately as possible, I think that it is necessary to keep in mind and train every time," said Ishikawa Zoo Planning and Education Officer Hidehiko Mikami.

Mikami added that he expects chimpanzees to be very fast if they were to escape and said they would probably move in a way zoo staff would not expect as they are "very intelligent."
