One of the last pre-code films to be made in Hollywood, "Two alone" stars Jean Parker as a young girl (Mazie) who leads a life of drudgery and hardship under the care of her abusive foster father, played by Arthur Byron. One day an escapee from a reform school (Tom Brown) takes refuge on their farm, and is given sanctuary by the father where he endures the same hard conditions as Mazie. A cruel indictment of what is basically the modern slave trade, "Two alone" is quite grim viewing at times, but thankfully reaches a happier conclusion by the end of the film. Neither Tom Brown or Jean Parker became top rank stars in Hollywood, although both had notable performances in the early years of their careers, notably Jean Parker's performances in "Little Women" and "The ghost goes west", and Tom Brown's 1932 film "Tom Brown of Culver" in which the character he played had the same name as himself. "Two alone" would have been considerably toned down had the Hays code already been introduced, including the skinny dipping scene near the start of the film, but as filming started in November 1933 it was already completed before the code came into effect. I'll be removing "Two alone" in a while so please view now if you would like to see it. This film has never to my knolwedge been transmitted on UK tv, but it has been shown on TCM in the US, the source for this copy. The next upload will be on Saturday 5th September and will definetly be a comedy to lighten the mood!
