On April 13, 2010, Cathay Pacific Flight 780 had a serious problem when its engines failed mid-flight. Flying at 38,000 Captain Malcolm Waters and his crew were near the end of their trip from Indonesia to Hong Kong. About 165 miles from Hong Kong, the flight computer warned that engine two had stalled. Captain Waters set the engine idle to avoid damage and prepared for an emergency landing. Then another alert went off, indicating an engine stall, leaving the plane without working engines. Just a minute before landing, an overspeed warning sounded. Even after reducing power, engine one still ran at high thrust, making the plane approach too fast. Captain Waters managed to land the Airbus on the runway. Amazingly, all 309 passengers survived due to the heroic efforts of the Australian pilots, though 57 were injured during the evacuation.
