Metrojet Flight 9268 was a chartered flight between Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt and St Petersburg, Russia on 31 October 2015. The flight was operated by an Airbus A321, and had 224 occupants on board. Most of the passengers on board were Russian tourists returning home from Red Sea resorts.

Flight 9268 took off at 5:50am local time. 23 minutes later, while the plane was at its cruising altitude of 31,000 feet, the flight failed to make contact with ATC. At this point, an explosion had occurred in the rear of the aircraft, causing the tail to separate from the rest of the plane. The remainder of Flight 9268 plummeted to the ground, and crashed in the desert, killing all 224 people on board.

Whilst theories such as a fuel tank explosion, metal fatigue or overheating batteries were considered, early evidence quickly pointed to a bomb explosion. Russian investigators claimed to have found explosive residue in the wreckage, and stated that a bomb with the power equivalent of 1kg of TNT was used to down Flight 9268. ISIL claimed responsibility for the attack and claimed that the explosive device was hidden in a soft drink can. Despite this, no criminal investigation has taken place so far and those responsible for the attack have never been officially identified. Also, no final report on the crash has ever been published.
