An introduction sets the scene before the arrival in a jazz club – For her new album “City Lights”, violinist Lisa Batiashvili has chosen eleven cities that are of importance to her, among them the city of Berlin, taking the listener across the world. Joined by Berlin-based star trumpeter Till Brönner, Nikoloz Rachveli’s arrangement of Ralph Maria Siegel’s “Ich hab’ noch einen Koffer in Berlin” (I’ve left a suitcase in Berlin), made famous by Marlene Dietrich, brings about a sense of history and nostalgia as it lets old recordings break through the surface. “What’s great about the piece”, Batiashvili points out, “is that I’m not trying to kind of be a jazz musician, nor is Till trying to play a classical part. We are both doing our thing and come together in this arrangement.”
