EPISODE 5: DEMPSEY BOB

The Audain Art Museum (AAM) returns with Season 2 of the popular Tuesday Night Talks (TNT) that offer a unique opportunity for online participants to simultaneously enter the Museum and the artist’s studio or home during the evening, while learning about key works in the AAM’s Permanent Collection directly from their respective makers.

Hosted by the Museum’s Director & Chief Curator, Dr. Curtis Collins, this fifth Episode features Dempsey Bob, a Terrace-based artist who has been among the leading Indigenous carvers in British Columbia for over forty years. Bob’s Tahltan-Tlingit ancestry is the central inspiration for his art, as evident in 'Northern Eagles Transformation Mask' of 2011. This brilliant work in the AAM’s holding captures the supernatural moment when human and animal forms coalesce according to legendary tales. The oversized yellow cedar mask is also testament to Bob’s incredible ability to manipulate wood in a highly plastic manner and underscores the artist’s signature torqueing of the form via simultaneous frontal and side views. 'Northern Eagles Transformation Mask' will be featured in 'Wolves: The Art of Dempsey Bob', a comprehensive exhibition of carvings, bronzes, prints and jewelry borrowed from private and public collections across Canada that opens at the Audain Art Museum in November 2021.
