In this interview, Arshan speaks with Blaccmass, a 22-year-old producer and mashup expert from Atlanta, GA. We were fortunate enough to meet up with Blaccmass for his first video interview ever during KTO’s latest trip to NY. In September 2020, Blaccmass released his most recent project, Starseed, which includes the song “Still Woo”, a mash-up of Pop Smoke’s “Gangstas” with the beat from Dr. Dre’s “Still Dre”. The song quickly took over Instagram and TikTok, and currently has over 4.1 million streams on Spotify alone.
During their conversation, Arshan asks if he’s often referred to as “legendary” for the originality and creativity of his mashup-style songs. He reveals that one of his biggest achievements was getting recognition from the band Earth, Wind, & Fire for his Pop Smoke rendition of their hit song “September”(called “Earth, Wood & Fire”). Blaccmass discusses his unintentional “faceless” persona, admitting “I let the work speak for me”, before talking about how being from Atlanta influenced his sound. He explains what he does (producing and creating the remixes he is now known for), and reveals that he got his start as a Travis Scott fanpage, with his name “Blaccmass” coming from a Travis Scott leak.
Blaccmass then tells the story behind the success of his first mashup-style song, which was Calvin Harris’ “Prayers Up” combined with Travis Scott’s “Way Back”. He explains how Kanye following him on Instagram served as major motivation for him to continue trying new things. Blaccmass then admits that his music tends to get the most attention on Twitter and Instagram, as well TikTok and YouTube. He breaks down his production process, including his ability to hear two songs at once, before splitting vocals/instrumentals from popular songs using a service called PhonicMind. He also admits to being his own toughest critic. Blaccmass details the TikTok success of his Pop Smoke / Candyshop remix, and how Scott Storch wouldn’t clear the song to be released officially. He says Pop Smoke was his favorite artist after 50 Cent, and that he wished he did the Candyshop remix while he was still alive. He mentions 50 Cent liking a post on another page that posted a Blaccmass remix, and how Playboi Carti wanted the beat from a Blaccmass Travis Scott remix. He then explains his experience at the DONDA album release show in Atlanta, and how he was able to post updates from behind the scenes.
As the interview comes to an end, Blaccmass gives growth and marketing advice for aspiring creators, saying “... don’t do what other people are doing, be original'', as well as learn how to mix and make something that's different enough to stand out. Blaccmass says his main goal is to eliminate genres in music, or in other words, create genreless music.
